Located in the heartland of the Waikato region, Hamilton is a funky, vibrant student town. With over 160,000 residents, Hamilton is the 4th largest city in New Zealand. It’s the perfect place for someone who wants to experience a unique aspect of New Zealand, while studying in an urban environment.  Waikato Pathways College is part of the University of Waikato, so studying English at WPC prepares students for success in whatever further study option they choose from the wide range of programmes on offer.

Hamilton is home to a large student population – nearly 1 in 4 of the city’s residents are in tertiary-education. With University of Waikato and Waikato Institute of Technology both located in Hamilton, you’ll have ample opportunity to mingle with other students if you choose to study English in Hamilton. The high concentration of students has led to the development of a diverse CBD, which is home to an exciting array of bars and restaurants that rival any of New Zealand’s bigger cities.

Finding student accommodation in Hamilton is easy. Landlords are accustomed to renting shared flats and houses to groups of students, so you’ll have no problem finding shared housing if this is your preference. We can also help you find a homestay family or recommend a student residence – there are so many options to choose from!

In addition to the wide variety of eateries, bars and entertainment venues in Hamilton, the city is home to several fine parks and museums. You’ll have no difficulty finding opportunities to practice English! Some of the favourite activities among our English New Zealand students include a trip to the Hamilton Zoo, watching a rugby game at Waikato Stadium or enjoying a leisurely stroll along the Hamilton River Walk. A visit to Hamilton Gardens or Taitua Arboretum is a favourite budget-friendly (entrance is free!) activity. You don’t need a car to get around – Hamilton has public transportation and is well connected to other towns and cities by bus.

While you’re studying in Hamilton, you may want to try some of New Zealand’s exciting adventure activities. An underground trip through the world-famous Waitomo Caves are a top choice among our English language students. If you want to get away for a night or two, Rotorua, the adventure capital of New Zealand, is just 1.5 hours away and Lake Taupo is less than 2 hours away. Our students also love zipping out to the coast for a visit to Raglan, the world-famous surf town that feels a world away from the bustle of Hamilton.

If you want to rub shoulders with students from all over the world, Hamilton is a great place to study English.
