As part of our MoU with Cambridge English, Dr Ardeshir Geranpeyeh presented a session focussing on English language testing, particularly the advantages of online computer adaptive testing. An example of online testing, the Business Language Testing Service – BULATS, was reviewed, as well as the rationale behind aligning language test results to the CEFR.  The use of externally validated qualifications to enhance employability was also discussed.

It was a privilege to have Dr Ardeshir Geranpayeh Head of Psychometrics and Data Services, Research and Validation Group, Cambridge English Language Assessment, present to our members.

Dr Geranpayeh leads a large team of research managers and analysts who carry out the statistical analysis of Cambridge English exams, run the computer-based adaptive testing engines and develop the associated IT systems. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh on the comparability of language proficiency testing.

Dr Geranpayeh has extensive experience of test validation and has contributed to the design, development, validation, revision and evaluation of many internationally recognised language proficiency tests.  He is a regular presenter and workshop leader in several international conferences such as; National Council on Measurement in Education, Association of Test Publishers, Language Testing Research Colloquium, Language Testing Forum and International Test Commission and has published extensively on language proficiency testing. His current interests include: automated marking of speaking and writing, detection of cheating and the use of technology in assessment.
