Teacher Training

Teacher Training courses are offered by a number of English New Zealand member schools. Successful completion of any of these courses does not guarantee that the minimum standard of qualification required for teachers to be employed at an English New Zealand school has been met.

Courses offered by members include the following internationally recognised qualifications:

Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)

A 4-week course for those with native speaker level competence in English who want to begin a career teaching English or who would like to up-skill and get a recognised qualification in this area.

Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults)

For qualified and experienced English language teachers with native speaker competence in English who want to further develop their teaching skills.

Cambridge TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test)

For non-native speakers, overseas teachers and overseas students who want to develop their teaching and language skills.

Trinity College, London - Certificate in TESOL

Intensive and semi intensive courses of 4-12 weeks. An initial teaching training qualification suitable for native speakers or people with native speaker level competence who want to work as English teachers in New Zealand or overseas.

Trinity Licentiate Diploma in TESOL

A post-graduate (Level 7) course offered over one or two years part-time. Suitable for experienced teachers wanting to up-skill for senior teaching and management positions.

Auckland English Academy

Auckland English Academy's 10-week TESOL instructor course is designed for teachers who want to teach English to children aged 3 to 13 years.

CCEL - Christchurch College of English

CCEL is one of New Zealand's leading private language schools with a reputation for excellence and offers several teacher training options:

Cambridge CELTA - 4 weeks full-time  offered three times per year.  Part-time Group Programme work is guaranteed to all successful graduates following each course. Scholarships may be available to successful applicants who plan to teach in China

Cambridge DELTA - a full-time 9-week course offered every two years

TESOL/Cambridge TKT - 6-week course offered 4 times per year

CPIT - School of English

CPIT offers a 5-week Teacher Training Certificate for upper intermediate students. The course focuses on the principles of communicative language teaching and involves practical teaching sessions. Cambridge CELTA courses are also offered at CPIT.

Dominion English Schools

Dominion English School Auckland offers a 4 week TECSOL teacher training programme that prepares teachers for teaching English at kindergarten and primary schools. The course includes a practicum at a New Zealand primary school. The TECSOL course is a pre-requisite for the J-Shine approved Japanese Primary Teacher Certification Programme. The J-Shine course takes 2 weeks and successful candidates can attain a licence to become a Japanese Teacher of English (JTE) in Japan.

Dynaspeak English

Dynaspeak offers courses by licence from Teach English Australia. The Certificate III and IV in TESOL have three components: in-class delivered at Dynaspeak, practicum delivered at Dynaspeak, and on-line theory work. These courses are suitable for working at schools overseas and in the case of the Certificate IV in TESOL also in English speaking countries.

Edenz Colleges - English College

Edenz teacher training offers both 10-week part time and 4-week full time courses for the Trinity Certificate in TESOL which is internationally recognized. Edenz trains more than 150 teachers each year and offers both Trinity and NZQA approved courses. Their Trinity Certificate courses (about 10 per year) have been running since 1995 and over 120 courses have been completed since then.

Edenz also offers the Trinity Diploma in TESOL which prepares teachers for more senior teaching posts. The Dip TESOL course is for experienced teachers. It designed to enable full time teachers to complete successfully. The Dip runs over a year via internet Moodle and consists of four phases finishing with a 2-week face to face, which prepares Candidates to present to the Trinity Examiner towards the end of the course.
