Established: 1995

Nelson English Centre was founded in 1995 by teacher trainer James Upton. Our intention was to build a top quality educational institute in one of the most beautiful areas of New Zealand. We are committed to delivering a high standard of service to our students and have gained a reputation for consistent, quality teaching and excellent pastoral support.

We offer up-to-date teaching methods in a relaxed atmosphere. Our small classes are ideal for adult students who are serious about learning English, and our strict "English-only" rule promotes a school environment where all students, regardless of nationality, can socialise together. Our activities programme provides opportunities to explore the beautiful Nelson region during your stay: whether you like beaches, mountains, bush or the city, there is something for here for you.

Our homestay families are carefully selected to provide you with a fabulous, genuine Kiwi experience during your stay. Staying with one of our families gives you the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture.

Nelson is a highly popular destination for New Zealanders and overseas visitors alike. The region has the most sunshine hours of any in New Zealand and is unique in that it has three national parks: the Abel Tasman, the Kahurangi and the Nelson Lakes national parks. Nearby Golden Bay is a haven for wildlife and craftspeople. There are many stunning beaches to relax on and the nearest ski field is just two hours away. You'll find numerous cafes, art galleries, vineyards and gourmet food producers to explore.

Nelson city is a small and safe, but lively city with a strong cafe culture and thriving nightlife. In summer, buskers entertain you on the streets, while you can see live music most nights in a wide variety of bars and venues around the town.
